About the IDI

The Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) is a powerful tool designed to assess and enhance an individual's intercultural competence. In today's increasingly diverse and interconnected world, intercultural competence is a crucial skill for individuals and organizations to navigate and thrive in a globalized environment. This proposal outlines the comprehensive administration and debrief process for the IDI, emphasizing its importance in fostering cultural awareness and competency among participants.

The Process

By following a structured process, participants can gain valuable insights, set meaningful goals, and work towards becoming more effective intercultural communicators and collaborators. Ultimately, investing in the development of intercultural competence contributes to the success and sustainability of organizations and communities in our diverse world

Pre-Assessment Preparation:

  • Identify the target group of participants and their specific needs.

  • Select a qualified IDI administrator or facilitator who is certified to administer the assessment.

  • Communicate the purpose and benefits of the IDI to participants, ensuring informed consent.

  • Ensure that participants complete the IDI assessment in a comfortable and confidential environment.

Debrief Process:

Group Debrief

  • Conduct a group debrief session to discuss common themes and trends among the participants.

  • Foster an open and inclusive dialogue about intercultural competence and its relevance to the organization or community.

  • Facilitate discussions on how improved intercultural competence can benefit the group as a whole.

Individual Feedback

  • Schedule one-on-one debrief sessions with each participant.

  • Share the individual IDI profiles, highlighting their current intercultural competence stage (e.g., Denial, Polarization, Minimization, Acceptance, Adaptation) and their orientation toward differences.

  • Discuss the implications of their IDI results and provide specific feedback on strengths and areas for development.

  • Encourage self-reflection and goal-setting for further development.

Action Planning:

  • Collaborate with participants to focus on their  personalized action plans (IDP) for enhancing their intercultural competence.

  • Encourage the development of tangible goals and strategies for ongoing growth.

  • Provide access to resources and training opportunities that align with participants' development needs.
